So the fact that glancing at a screenshot of your project can mostly trick my brain into thinking “yes this is the vanilla game, all is well” is fucking crazy and personally unprecedented. Its not the same thing, but I’ve had to do something sorta similar in some vectorization freelance work, and yeah, it can be a real pain - and I was working with source images nowhere near as low-res, and without having to worry about making them seamlessly repeat, or any other shit like that. All subjective anyway lol)Īnd I just wanna note how crazy that is to me, considering how fuckin tiny those source textures are. (with some little nitpicks ofc - only one I can think of offhand is, uh, maybe the great fairy’s body leaves? I don’t even remember what I didn’t like about them.

Even side-by-side, shit fits like a glove and absolutely maintains the original look. Nah man - as someone who usually ain’t into texture packs at all, in your latest update video I was kinda floored with just how faithful stuff looks.

Even if you disagree with how I interpreted this example, I think it's clear that I tried to retain as many of the original pixel details as possible and that can only be done by manually painting: It's much harder to interpret a low res pixel texture than most of you think, and figuring out what the old texture was supposed to be in the first place is often harder than doing the painting. It's unfortunate that the screenshots in the OP are from the very beginning because the pack got better as it went along and shifted heavily to hand drawing when the mountain area started, this is more representative of what most of the pack looks like: The point was always to try to bring the original art designs into clear focus, not to look realistic or hyper detailed. I don't really mind if you say you hate how the pack looks but the "ultra realistic google photo pack" complaints do bother me because the vast majority of the textures were hand drawn to match the originals. No one is in the wrong for liking one version of a game more than another. I'm entitled to have my own opinions about which version is more enjoyable just like everyone else, there's no need to stick up for the 3D version as if it's under attack a texture pack release has absolutely zero impact on your ability to play it, so rest easy. When the 3D restoration patch was made I decided to bring textures over to that version as well, but I still enjoy playing 64 more there are lots of things the restoration mod can't fix. I went back to the 64 version and had far more fun with it, which is why I started the mod and also made that comparison video. I had been eager for the remake and really wanted to like it but just didn't enjoy it, and enjoyed it even less when giving it a second chance years later.
